#2 What length of narrowboat is best to suit my needs?
The length of boat you require obviously depends on the number of people who will be using the boat and the period of time that you will spend on it. You will find that a 30 – 40 foot boat provides ample space for a holiday boat that you use mainly for short periods in the year. If you are looking at a narrowboat length of 50 feet plus then this size of boat is ideal for extended cruising or live aboard if you are looking for a lifestyle change.
A further point to bear in mind is where you intend taking your boat on the UK canal systems. You shoudl pay attention to length of boat in relation to lock dimensions. There are a number of locks around the country that restrict access to certain waterways, the lengths are as follows:
- Leeds & Liverpool 60 feet (62 feet can just fit through)
- Calder & Hebble 57 feet 6 inch
