Still Icy Weather !Monday, December 20th, 2010

As everyone in the country knows, the spell of freezing weather continues and everyone is getting a bit fed up with it.

There was a solitary swan sitting on the ice on the canal yesterday preening itself.  It was there all afternoon and well into the evening.  We were a bit concerned that it may have got frozen to the ice so we took some duck pellets, bread and a boat pole and managed with throwing food and bashing the ice with the pole to get it moving. It didnt look very happy and we wondered where its mate had got to as it was unusual for them not to be together.  Paul took the dogs out around 10.45pm and the swan flew off as they went by.  We havent seen it since, so hope it’s alright and will keep you posted if it comes back soon.

All the ducks are starving, we bought 3 sacks of duck pellets the other day and have already gone through one sack.  They come through the bushes in a line and huddle together with their necks craning upwards a bit like rugby players waiting for the ball to be thrown in. As soon as the pellets hit the ground it’s a free for all to get at the food and the noise from excited quacking is quite loud.  We have been hand feeding some of them, as being hungry has made them lose their fear of us, even Mr White (the only pure white duck) has taken food from us.  As soon as there is no more food left they all retreat back through the bushes to the marina side.  We counted over 80 the other day !

The trees and bushes are covered in a beautiful frost which makes it feel more Christmassy and it’s on my list of  ‘things to do’ to take some photos which will be posted on here at a future date.
